The LangOps Institute Principles

Eight principles for treating language as a strategic asset rather than a downstream cost. Together they describe how LangOps — language operations — connects business objectives, knowledge, automation, and AI into one accountable system.

Edwin Trebels worked on these principles together with Anouk Perquin, with an honorable mention to Pascale Tremblay.

These principles were inspired by the original LangOps Manifesto and were further developed for the LangOps Institute, which Edwin Trebels co-founded and where he served as Director of Strategic Partnership and Advisory Board Chair.

Objective-driven decision making

To effectively transform language into a strategic asset through LangOps processes, a well-defined and quantifiable alignment between overall business objectives and implemented actions is crucial. LangOps is not a stand-alone process with isolated value; rather, it supports and enhances all business processes by delivering language products at the appropriate times.

Continuous improvement and delivery methodology

By breaking down concepts and ideas into smaller, incremental solutions, the focus shifts to tackling the most pressing issues. This approach promotes a rapid delivery cycle for content and language assets. A feedback loop is implemented to ensure a proactive approach in designing and implementing solutions.

Responsible AI

AI technologies are powerful tools that greatly enhance human capabilities and serve as a key differentiator for companies. When used effectively, AI can accelerate the development of multilingual and multimodal communication, as well as content creation methods. It is crucial that AI usage aligns with company values, and sustainable and ethical practices must be applied when integrating AI technologies into existing workflows and systems.

Knowledge management

A centralized and structured knowledge practice is at the core of effective content management and decision-making processes. The range of information is vast, including complex structures like knowledge graphs and simple forms like plain text. This diversity allows for a comprehensive understanding of various types of information. To ensure accuracy and consistency, knowledge must be centralized and stored in a single, authoritative source where it can be effectively managed.

Modularity and interoperability are critical factors to enable agile, best-of-breed systems, fostering cross-functional collaboration and continuous improvement. When data flows freely and systems are designed to complement each other, businesses can respond quickly to market changes and customer needs.
